Research Objectives

  1. Evaluate weed tolerance of different soybean varieties
  2. Evaluate different strategies for controlling weeds early in the life of the soybean crop
  3. Evaluate the effect of a fall rye cover crop on in-crop weeds and soybean yield

Project Description

Weed control is one of the greatest challenges in organic soybean production. Weed control strategies in organic systems include understanding the biology of major weeds, crop rotation, growing a competitive crop, use of mulches or cover crops, and timely tillage. This project focuses on three of these strategies: cover crop mulches, competitive varieties and tillage system. A series of field experiments will be conducted on long-term organically managed lands at Glenlea and Carman, MB in both 2009 and 2010. All experiments will be conducted using a randomized complete block experimental design with 4 replicates. All experiments will involve wide-row soybean production.
