Research Objectives

Evaluate commercial crops of dry beans in Manitoba for root rot, isolate fungal colonies from root rot lesions, identify Fusarium and Rhizoctonia spp. and conduct pathogenicity tests for Fusarium isolates from dry beans.

Project Description

Root rot is a serious disease of common bean for which successful control has been elusive. In Manitoba, Rhizoctonia solani and Fusaruim solani have been the most prevalent causal agents for root rot in dry bean but recent findings suggest other Fusarium species have the potential to infect common bean cultivars. To acquire new information on root rot pathogens in Manitoba, 40 commercial bean fields will be evaluated for the incidence and severity of root rot. Rhizoctonia and Fusarium spp. will be identified and pathogenicity tests will be conducted using a susceptible bean cultivar. This research will provide new information on root rot pathogens in order to screen for host resistance and design effective control measures.
