Research Objectives
- Evaluate the mung bean lines introduced from China that matured and set seeds in our exploratory trials, and to select the ones best suitable to southern Manitoba
- Investigate the appropriate seeding rate and seeding date of mung bean for mung bean production in southern Manitoba
Project Description
Mung bean is a small-seeded legume and can potentially be grown in most regions adapted for soybean and dry bean. Thus, mung bean may be suitable to southern Manitoba. In 2007 and again in 2009 the Pea Breeding program at the Morden Research Station undertook exploratory trials of mung bean. We introduced many elite breeding lines from China and grew them in Morden. Majority of the introduced lines reached maturity and set seeds quite well in these exploratory trials. The study demonstrated that mung bean can be successfully grown in southern Manitoba and a few genotypes were identified that could be grown as commercial varieties or used as breeding materials.
