Research Objectives

Selection for:

  1. (i) maturity appropriate to the bean growing regions of Manitoba
  2. (ii) high seed yield and quality
  3. (iii) upright growth habit with acceptable pod clearance, and
  4. (iv) improved resistance to common bacterial blight and anthracnose.

Project Description

An integrated genetic improvement of dry bean for seed yield, quality and disease resistance is critical to the long term sustainability of the dry bean industry in Manitoba. Selection for desirable maturity under Manitoba growing environments, increased seed yield, improved resistance to biotic (disease) and abiotic (water logging) stresses, seed quality (size, shape, colour, colour retention, canning and cooking), and plant ideotype (indeterminate bush growth habit with lodging resistance and acceptable pod clearance) will be performed in the early and advanced generation selection nurseries. Elite dry bean lines will be entered into the cooperative registration yield trials grown in Manitoba. The MPSG Wide Row Regional Trials will be grown at four locations and the Narrow Row Regional Trials will be grown at two locations.
